December 5, 2014

I wanted to finish Ironman Arizona 2014 very much, for personal reasons - I want revenge on that course! But that was not in the cards, apparently. Broken spokes and flats prevented me from finishing the 3rd loop of the bike course, and being able to continue on in the run. Well, stuff happens, as they say - and always for a reason, I believe. I think He has a reason for this, and while it is a disappointment to me, in the grand scheme of things, a pretty minor setback. After all, unlike others racing that day, I survived my race without getting hurt, and the issues with the bike are easily remedied. And, there are bigger things on the horizon. So it was a mixed bag of events that weekend.

So, that mixed bag of blessings...I was signed up for the Ironman Lake Tahoe 70.3 race this past September. I was looking forward to riding that challenging course. But a big fire and lots of smoke caused the race to be cancelled, but not without consequences. The Ironman folks offered up a list of alternate races that IMLT attendees could register for at a greatly reduced price, AND if you made your choice by 10/15/2014, your name was automatically put into the bucket for a drawing on 11/14/2014, to receive one of the 30 slots designated for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Austria September 2015. Well, my choice was pretty easy given my 2015 calendar, and I chose to go back to Tahoe.

Lo and behold, when I looked at my email that Friday morning, there was one there from Ironman. I had completely forgot about the drawing, figuring my 1 in 80 chance was pretty slim. But I got one of the slots! Truly, I figure they need a DFF (Designated Final Finisher) because you normally have to win your age group at a 70.3 race to qualify for the Worlds. But what the heck, I will take it! Needless to say, that $50 to IMLT 70.3 will go unused.

So the training will continue. I have to work out a calendar of races leading up to this big one, and lots of swimming, biking and running in between. Plus, I am hoping to raise funds for our non-profit, Do It Like It Means Something, to begin sponsoring and presenting athletic events in central Texas (and anywhere else I can convince people to hold events) to inspire and motivate children and adults alike to get away from the television and couch, and into the water, on a bike, or out on the running trail. People need to be more active - sedentary behavior causes so many negative consequences! I am a living example, and can clearly demonstrate that life does not end on the surgery table or in a doctor's office. There is so much we can do, so much we can offer, as athletes, coaches -- even race spectating, if that is your preference. (Hey, spectating an Ironman race is extremely challenging - I think spectators work as hard as the athletes at some of these events!)

The video below will show a brief picture of what an Ironman race is like...

You can come on this journey as well, even as a Virtual Participant! More to come on that soon... But if you don't want to race virtually, perhaps you want to support our non-profit.

So - the fundraising... Do It Like It Means Something is a federally registered, 501(c)(3) non-profit, so your contributions, your support of active, healthy living, is FULLY TAX-DEDUCTIBLE. You can see our mission statement, goals and objectives on the website, so I won't be redundant here. What I WILL say is that I hope you take this opportunity to become involved in what we are trying to accomplish. Any amount is appreciated, and you will be provided a receipt for tax purposes.

Hopefully, you will feel as excited as I am about getting people active, motivated and inspired to do something positive in their lives! If so, please consider giving to our cause, and donate by clicking the "DONATE" link at the top of this page. Once you join our team, you can count on regular updates in your email mailbox, and possibly some freebies from sponsors as we develop those relationships. I want to thank you now as well, whatever your level of support.

Whether or not you support Do It Like It Means Something, please just think about supporting whatever cause you choose, to promote healthy living, to inspire others to do so... just DO SOMETHING!

So - Here we go, baby! Come on along on this journey!
